St Bartholomew – the – Great, Smithfield, September 21, 2010

A choice recital of unaccompanied solo string music given by the leader and violist of the Kreutzer String Quartet, but attended by a mere dozen listeners...

The ambience and acoustic of this great Norman church are ideal, and Tartini's late "little sonatas" [see extract from Paul Brainard's paper below] are attractive and varied.

They were introduced by PSS with great enthusiasm and this series, which is aiming at producing a complete recording, probably the first, deserves better support.

Of the contemporary works included for variety, Judith Bingham's was notably beautiful, Hersch's very serious pieces prompts exploration of this little known (here) American composer, and the Berio Sequenze (relentless tremolandi !) a veritable tour de force, was exhausting for player and listener alike.

Peter Sheppard Skærved was in great form and played magnificently throughout this long and demanding programme, perhaps so because he was not burdentd with organising and directing a concert involving many other musicians; the recording should need very little "patching".

Look out for further concerts in this significant series.

A prevous recording of some of the Tartini Sonate Piccole is a rare collectors item.
