Mozart Trio in E-flat, ‘Kegelstatt’
Ensemble DeNOTE
THE INSTITUTE OF MUSICAL RESEARCH

Optic Nerve

Launched at a recent conference at Senate House, this DVD of a favourite Mozart trio consists of a documentary introduction and performance on copies of early instruments, filmed by Colin Still the Finchcocks Collection of Early Instruments in Goudhurst.

No audience present for the multiple camera filming, with restless editing and change of viewpoint every few seconds, which some may find distracting; John Irving has to look up to the camera when giving his explanations. No audience at the bottom of the stairs at Finchcocks; a few listeners in the background might have helped the "conversation" idea of the presentation?

But despite minor reservations, this is surely the best account of this delightful trio available on DVD; far better than sound-only CDs.

Recommended.
