English recorder music Piers Adams & Julian Rhodes Red Priest RPR RP010 A welcome re-release of English recorder classics composed 1939-82 and recorded 1993. The instrument's revival was sparked by Carl Dolmetsch after its eclipse for more than a century. Recorder playing has improved out of all recognition (including Adams' own !) since those days. Some of these were current, notably the Berkeley sonatina, when I studied recorder with Walter Bergmann. Rubbra's Meditazione is a particular favourite of mine and the whole is a very worth while collection, with Dodgson's substantial title piece a notable re-discovery, one that should resume and retain a firm place in the contemporary repertoire. Do see the touching biography of the pianist, who died young. Peter Grahame Woolf |
