Palestrina: Missa Aeterna Christi Munera

Aeterna Christi munera - Hymn
Missa "Aeterna Christi Munera"
Motets including 4 from "Canticum Canticorum
Magnificat Primi Toni

Westminster Cathedral Choir/O'Donnell

HYPERION HELIOS CDH55368

In these hard times, each month I always look to re-releases I've missed. They are good value, sifting the catalogues carefully chosen, always so with Hyperion's Helios.

I'd tended to pass by Guivanni Pierluigi da Palestrina as being a bit bland in comparison with, say, the English Tudor composers of 16 C.

This comparatively brief 4-part Missa Aeterna Christi Munera has long been a favourite with church choirs, as Bruno Turner explains. Its serenity, and the tranquillity of the final Dona Nobis Pacem, are winning, and have encouraged me to listen to more Palestrina - whom I used to know better through Pfitzner's opera ! A very satisfying disc
