Beethoven : Complete Music for Piano Trio

The Florestan Trio
Anthony Marwood violin
Richard Lester cello
Susan Tomes piano

HYPERION: CDS44471/4 (4 compact discs at a special price)

We have been following the Florestan Trio in recital and CDs since its formation * (and its members since long before that) and it is good to have their Beethoven Trios conveniently boxed - and cheaper!

They are bench-mark performances, fit to stand with the Beaux Arts etc, and this reissue is beautifully packaged, with the four discs colour coded and with an excellent survey of the oeuvre by Richard Wigmore [2011].

I've sampled two of my favourites, the Eb Trio Op 70/2 and the Kakadu Variations, with a portentous introduction to a trivial operatic theme; just like Dohnanyi was to do with his Variations on a Nursery Song. Delightful, and the Florestans won't let you down in the more "important" Ghost & Archduke trios.

* The Florestan Trio was founded by Susan Tomes, pianist of the renowned piano quartet Domus, with Anthony Marwood and Richard Lester. It is an equally distinguished ensemble, in demand worldwide and on CD. Their recital was one of the high points of our week. The three players are perfectly attuned, Susan Tomes still and watchful at the piano, rarely seeming to need to look at the piano and never at her hands. - - A magisterial performance of the Archduke trio concluded a notably satisfying morning; the Florestan Trio's recording of the Schumann trios is well worth exploring (Hyperion CDA67063)
